Faces of Evil: Vecna temple
The team opens the doors to the Labyrinth of Vecna and moves inside. Proceeding down the hall a bit they are immediately spotted by the Kenku on watch. After the team has moved on past he and the other Kenku (whom he's informed) move out quietly to sneak up behind them. Meanwhile the two Dire Weasels are approaching from the north.
Gutter hears movement down the hallway in front of them. However, Dire Weasel1 has heard the team moving around as well and both of them move down the hallway quickly to engage each other. They are 50' apart when Gutter spots them. Only Gutter and Dire Weasel1 are aware.
Surprise:
Gutter warns the others and charges Dire Weasel2: hit, 11

Turning around and heading back to where they were before the fight started, the team walks right past a small group of Kenku in a side passage and run head first into yet another group that was attempting to sneak up behind them. Though they don't spot the group they walk past they do spot the one ahead of them (though they can only the see the first member of the three-Kenku group).

The team takes the time to loot the corpses of the strange bird people (and Rue replenishes her supply of alchemist's fire from them) before moving on. Meanwhile the rest of the Kenku in the maze have plenty of time to take position. Now the team moves more slowly, checking for secret doors like the one their ambusher's used. Interestingly it's Gutter, who has no particular Search skill, who finds the door to Kenku Group #2's lair. They take time to search the room but find nothing beyond basic supplies.
As they exit the room and return to their search they hears the sounds of a Dire Weasel attacking something, followed by shrieks of pain from another of the strange bird people. Dashing ahead to check it out they hear the sound moving away, as if the Dire Weasel is dragging off it's prey. When the reach the area where they heard the sounds they find nothing. Before they can move out to try to track down the disturbance they are attacked.
Surprise:
Kenku1 moves out of the secret room and drops his sunrod. He throws a vial of alchemist's fire at Toerag: miss. All three kobolds take 1 damage.
Kenku2 moves out of the secret room and throws a vial of alchemist's fire at Toerag: hit, 3. Gutter and Rue take 1 damage.

The team heals their wounds with Rue's wand before continuing on. After wandering about, mapping out the maze as best they can, they eventually stumble upon Kenku Group #3's lair but don't find anything of interest in searching it.
Deciding to scout out the perimeter of the maze first the team soon discovers the secret door leading to the Outer Sanctum, at which point Kenku Group #3 attacks from their hiding place.

Kenku Boss steps out of the secret room, drops a sunrod and throws a 5d6 fireball from his Necklace of Fireballs at the team. Gutter: 23, Toerag: 0 (saves, evades), Rue: 17
Kenku Lt. steps out and casts Grease on the square that Toerag occupies (she saves).

Rue maneuvers around and back down the hall to approach the Kenkus from the side. She reaches into her haversack and draws out a thunderstone, tossing it at the ground at Kenku Boss's feet: hit.

After watching the floating whip for a minute to be sure it isn't going to attack the team heals up with Rue's wand and loots the bodies, then proceed through the secret door.
In the Outer Sanctum Rue and Toerag search the area. Toerag makes her save but Rue falls under the thrall of the columns and falls into a catatonic state for 5 minutes. When they are unable to rouse her, Gutter and Toerag carry her back through the doorway to watch over her in the maze.
When she finally come around she suffers 1 Wisdom damage, which doesn't effect her stats at the moment.
Moving back into the Outer Sanctum the team steers clear of the columns. Gutter moves down the western part of the hall to listen at the door but hears nothing. Regrouping they send Toerag to spy around the northern corner where she sees the two Acolytes and the Allip without being seen. The team then moves back to make their plan of attack. Once agreed they move to the western door and make their assault.
Gutter and Rue each take a tanglefoot bag in hand, then Rue uses her Wand of Enlarge Person on both Toerag and Gutter, casts Mage Armor on all three of them. At that point the bulges in the walls all open, revealing themselves to be eyes that dart back and forth. The team springs their attack.
Surprise:
Rue opens the door to the Inner Sanctum.
Toerag moves through the door and engages Acolyte1 from the far side.
Gutter moves to engage Acolyte2 and Allip.

Acolyte3, warned of the intruders by the wall-eyes in the Outer Sanctum, rushes out to find them. He drinks Potion of Shield of Faith +3
The Allip attacks Gutter: miss.
* Toerag makes her save vs. the Allip's Babble attack, immune for 24 hours.
* Gutter makes his save vs. the Allip's Babble attack, immune for 24 hours.
* Rue makes her save vs. the Allip's Babble attack, immune for 24 hours.
The Faceless One leaves the Laboratory to find the intruders, exiting east, heading through the northern door into the Inner Sanctum. He summons a Fiendish Huge Monstrous Centipede, using his Lesser Metamagic Rod (extend), between him and the battle.
Acolyte4 takes the same path as The Faceless One and drinks his Potion of Shield of Faith +3 once there.
Acolyte2 starts to drink his Potion of Gaseous Form, Gutter's AOO: hit, 11, killing him.
Gutter attacks Allip: hit, 12
Fiendish Huge Monstrous Centipede attacks Gutter: miss

Acoltye4 moves next to The Faceless One and casts Web (scroll) to block the other half of the room, sealing them off from the team.
Gutter steps to the door, opens it and moves east to come at The Faceless One and Acolyte4 from the far side.
Toerag moves out of the Webs with them between her and Faceless One/Acolyte4
Rue casts Scorching Ray at The Faceless One: (despite his having cover from the webs) hit, 19, hit, 17, then follows after Gutter

The team spends the next few minutes healing, searching and looting the area and various corpses, unaware that the Ebon Aspect has already climbed out of the pool and smashed the elevator. As they search The Faceless One's Laboratory the Ebon Aspect races through the maze, coming after them.
It catches them, still in the Laboratory, and slams through the eastern door. As they heard the huge monster coming just before it hit the door, they are not surprised.

Rushing to Rue's side, Toerag succeeds in stabilizing her. After assuring herself that the sorcerer will live she sets about looting the room before hauling Rue, unconscious, all the way through the maze to the Temple of Hextor, where they camp. Resting in the Tiefling's bed Rue recovers consciousness after a full night's sleep and is able to heal both herself and Toerag with her wand. She is heartbroken at Gutter's death but determined to go on (though Toerag does note that Rue's behavior seems decidedly strange).
The duo, weak and wounded, makes their way out of the temple as best they can. Toerag uses her Rope of Climbing and climbing gear to get past the shattered elevator housing and when night falls they sneak past the Dourstone Mine guards to Allustan's house. He, in turn, contacts the governor-mayor and presents the evidence the team had gathered implicating Smenk and Ragnolin. An investigation is launched (which Allustan and Toerag accompany in order to retrieve her fallen comrade...and their loot), after which the two mine managers are arrested. Meanwhile Rue stays in bed at Allustan's house, suffering strange nightmares and visions seemingly triggered by her encounter with the column in the Outer Sanctum and her subsequent near-death experience.
Allustan invites Toerag and Rue to stay on at his house until the whole thing blows over and Toerag leaves only to fetch the last of their gear from the abandoned mine office before moving in temporarily.
